College Profile

UNSW

Warrane College is an affiliated residential College accommodating 140 men within the University of New South Wales (UNSW). UNSW is consistently ranked as one of the Australia’s leading international universities and attracts superior students from Australia and overseas. UNSW is a member of the Group of Eight, a coalition of Australia’s leading research universities and of Universitas 21, an active network of internationally competitive research-intensive universities. Further information about UNSW and its academic programs is available at www.unsw.edu.au.

The College is located on Anzac Parade, Kensington, in the south-western corner of the UNSW campus, only a few minutes walk from university sporting facilities, shops and restaurants. Buses to the Sydney’s CBD, airport and other major centres depart from the front of College. The College’s facilities are housed in a modern eight-storey building. All residential bedrooms and bathrooms as well as dining and kitchen facilities were renovated in 2002-03. The remaining common areas and offices are due to be renovated by June 2008.

Foundation

In 1969, the then Archbishop of Sydney, Norman Cardinal Gilroy, invited Opus Dei, a prelature of the Catholic Church, to operate a College at the Kensington campus of UNSW. Opus Dei accepted the responsibility for the pastoral care of the College while a non-profit company, Education Development Association (EDA), undertook the management of the College’s day-to-day operations.

Further information about EDA is available at www.eda.edu.au

Roden Cutler opens college

The name of the College is derived from the aboriginal word for the Sydney Cove area, "Warrang". The name highlights the recognition by Warrane and UNSW of Australia’s Indigenous people as original inhabitants of land in this locality.

Four staff members assist the Master in the running of the College: Dean, two Assistant Deans and Bursar. Staff live in College and make themselves available for the needs of students.

Two residential tutors live on each residential floor together with 25 students. Tutors are mentors to the students, providing academic and personal support. They are also responsible for fostering a home-like environment that is well-organised, vibrant and conducive to study.

Several academic tutors and residential Fellows live in College. They are distinguished academic staff or students of UNSW who conduct the academic program of the College, including formal tutorials and consultation times for different university subjects.

Students

The range of students at Warrane is diverse, in terms of place of origin, university studies, belief background and extra-curricula interests. This makes for an enriching learning experience.

The majority of students are undergraduate, with about a third in their first year of university study. While all faculties are represented in the College, a large proportion of students belong to the three faculties of Engineering, Medicine and Commerce & Economics.

There are several residents undertaking higher degree programs at UNSW such as Master and Doctorate programs. Younger students benefit from the inspiration and experience of these advanced students.

Tradition

Over the past 30 years, Warrane has built a number of proud traditions that distinguish it from other colleges. The Wednesday night formal dinner is the weekly focus of collegial life. A guest speaker, eminent in professional or public life, dines with residents and gives an after dinner presentation. Sport features prominently with the "Willy Wong Sportsman of the Week" award presented every week and large crowds rally to support College sports teams. Evening get-togethers for residents on each floor have been institutionalised in the nightly "coffee clubs". Throughout the university session, there is a custom of "quiet time" on the residential floors each evening that helps to promote the academic environment of the College.

Household Administration

The Warrane Household Administration provides housekeeping and catering services. Every effort is made to make the College a home, rather than an institution. A high priority is given to cleanliness, with rooms and common areas serviced three times each week. Variety is seen in meals, catering for Australian, European and Asian tastes. The home atmosphere is also seen in the provision by College staff of packed lunches, late meals, special meals for residents who are ill, and birthday cakes.

Security

The College reception desk is attended between 7.00 am and midnight every day of the year. The attendant not only provides security at the College’s entrance, but is also the welcoming face of College for students coming home.

Outside these hours, residents enter the College by ringing a night bell that is attended by a member of staff. As a courtesy to staff and others, residents are asked to return to College at a reasonable time.
