Scholarship

Warrane College’s principle role is to foster an academic environment. It seeks to achieve this through:

  Delivering a comprehensive tutorial program
Providing individual and peer academic mentoring
  Offering facilities for study
Sustaining a College culture that encourages and rewards academic achievement

Tutorial Program

Warrane College’s tutorial program covers undergraduate core subjects. This will vary from year to year, depending on the cohort of students in residence. Traditionally, the following subject areas are covered:

  Accounting

  Chemistry

  Mathematics

  Physics

  Anatomy

  Computing

  Mechanics

  Spanish

  Biology

  Economics

  Philosophy

Tutorials are conducted for groups of students by UNSW staff or senior students, who reside in College. Tutors also make themselves available for one-on-one consultation outside these set times.

Academic Mentoring

Residential tutors who live alongside residents mentor individual students in their academic progress. These tutors are senior residents of the College who have demonstrated that they can balance the demands of their academic work with sporting, social and other commitments. Tutors talk individually with students about their studies and other activities, helping them to set personal goals, manage their time and take full advantage of the opportunities that university and College presents to them. They also refer residents to academic tutors or other College staff for assistance in particular subject areas.

Library group

Warrane College encourages peer mentoring. That is, students of like programs and years form syndicates to study together, particularly on group assignments. Older residents regularly lend a hand to younger students, passing on their recent experience. This informal support system relieves the anxiety of first-year students, unsure of the expectations that university places on them.

Facilities

The priority that Warrane College gives to academic work is seen in the allocation of space for private and group study. The College library is a hub of academic work, due to its quiet location near the Village Green. Adjoining the library are several other study/tutorial rooms used for conducting tutorials or personal study. On each floor of the College, studio rooms with large benches provide a useful workspace for residents undertaking studies in engineering, architecture or building.

A common computer Lab, located on the first floor, consists of 8 computers, a laser printer and boardband Internet connection.

Culture

Warrane College promotes a culture of academic achievement. Although the College welcome students of diverse academic abilities, there is an expectation that each resident will approach university with a responsible attitude.

On residential floors, evening time after dinner is regarded as "quiet time" for those in College at the time, pursuing academic work. This is punctuated by nightly gatherings of residents of each floor in "Coffee Club", normally held at 9.30 pm. Tutors and members of staff reside in College and their availability helps foster an academic environment.

Medals

Throughout the year, tutors organise "study days" and "study weekends" where residents can escape to get through a lot of study in a different venue. At examination time, tutors organise trial examination papers and provide extra tutoring.

Academic achievement is recognised in awards presented to College residents. At the Wednesday formal dinner, the Master regularly presents the "Master’s award for academic achievement". Each year, the College recognises those students who achieved a Distinction average score in the previous year with "College Scholar Medallions".
